"USAF KC-10 TANKER" The boom operator took the top photo of a nine plane A-3 formation out of
his window. It was during a 'RIMPAC' exercise in 1984. The A-3 squadrons involved were
VAQ-34, VAK-208, and VAK-308.
The lower photo is an exterior view of the boom operators window.
Note the rigid refueling boom (USAF style) on the left and the retracted refueling hose
(USN style) on the right. |

"FRAMP certificate" 'FRAMP' (Fleet Replacement Aviation Maintenance Personnel) duties were
carried out by VAQ-130 and later by VAQ-33 after VAH-123 no longer provided those
services. This is AMH2 McKinney's certificate from 1972. |

"VAQ-33 FAMILY" Circa 1972, This is a line-up on the ramp at NAS Norfolk. 4 types of
aircraft flown by VAQ-33 included A-3 BuNo 138968. That A-3 crashed on Oct. 10, 1972 and
took the lives of LTJGs Grant, Ritchie and Haushalter.

"EXTRA DUTY' AIRSAR (Air-to-Air Radar Imaging Measurements) was designed to measure
aircraft radar cross sections (RCS) in flight . BuNo 144856, now with Raytheon, was fitted
with a Log-Periodic Dipole Array in a tail extension. The modification was completed in
1991 and the tests ran for 2 years.
AIRSAR was installed
on this A-3 Skywarrior and used
to measure a variety of aircraft,
including the B-2. The A-3 carried
a crew of five (pilot, two observers,
and two radar operators) and
provided up to 4 hours of AIRSAR
data at flight speeds of 250-300
knots. The AIRSAR Radar covers
VHF, UHF, S, X, and Ku-bands.

"Lucille, the 1st" Vic Kretsinger (ADJ3 55-63), 135442's PC lays claim to have first named an
A-3. The brass took dim notice of the name but let it stand. 'Lucille, the 1st'
is seen here painted on the bomb sight periscope cover of Vic's plane.

"VQ-2 00" TA3-B, BuNo 144863, of VQ-2 often visited Naples (Capodichino airport) and
was widely known by the tower for it's Red/White/Blue drag chute. Unfortunately, on July
7, 1974 after takeoff on runway '06' at Naples it went down claiming the crew. If it had
used the more common runway, '24' it would have crashed in downtown Naples.

"Naples taxi" VQ-2's EA-3B, BuNo 146454, taxis to the Naval Air Facility after landing
on runway 24 at Naples Capodichino airport. Taken by Carlo Tripodi, aerospace journalist
and 'Whaler' from Napoli, Italy. Ranger 16 is now 'Rayco 74' at Raytheon Flight Testing in
