"Dawn Launch" 'Ranger 17', EA-3B (146455), from VQ-2 on the starboard bow cat of the
Coral Sea (CV-43).
Mission: Electronic Warfare, locate and identify hostile Libyan Naval Combatant ships. Use
AN/ALR-40 ESM and COMINT systems. Mission was successful with the destruction of a Libyan
ship by an A-6 bomber.
Note the action: Cat crew departing from bridle hookup,
Troubleshooter checking bleed ports at both engines as they are brought
up to full power and the button man in the catwalk at the ready. It looks
a 'thumbs up launch'.

Know any of these guys? KA-3B, BUNO 138944, GD220.
Preflight antics prior to A-3 flyover at the 1987 Whale reunion at NAS
Key West. L to R: AD1 Rich Harrison, LT Doug Patton,

Oops! Pt. Mugu, VAQ-34. DO NOT charge a nose strut to
5000 psi. It promptly sets the aircraft on its tail and seperates the strut into
multiply parts. Then the nose comes back down on top of jacks and other
equipment. Well, they got it fixed (5 weeks later) and were much wiser
than before. No injuries resulted, except egos. |
